PRESS STATEMENT
ABIA PDP ACTIVATES LEGAL TEAM OVER ARREST OF STATE YOUTH LEADER, COMRADE UGWUMBA ADIELE
The attention of the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abia State Chapter, has been drawn to the arrest and detention of our State Youth Leader, Comrade Ugwumba Adiele, by security agents for reasons that, as at the time of issuing this statement, remain unknown to the leadership of the Party and, reportedly, to his family.
While the Party recognises the legitimate responsibility of security agencies to investigate matters within their statutory mandate, the Abia PDP leadership considers it imperative that every such action must be undertaken strictly within the ambit of the law, with due regard for the constitutional rights and dignity of the individual concerned.
Consequently, the Party has activated its Legal Department and legal team to urgently establish the circumstances and root cause of Comrade Adiele’s arrest and detention, ascertain the agency or authorities responsible, and take all necessary lawful steps towards securing his immediate release, where no lawful basis exists for his continued detention.
We urge all relevant security authorities to exercise utmost professionalism and restraint and to ensure that the rights guaranteed to our Youth Leader under the Constitution and applicable laws are fully respected. Any investigation, questioning or other proceedings involving him should be conducted transparently and in accordance with due process.
The Abia PDP leadership is equally concerned that no action should be taken, directly or indirectly, that may constitute an infringement of his fundamental rights, particularly the right to personal liberty, fair hearing and access to appropriate legal representation as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
We call on our teeming members, supporters and the general public to remain calm and law-abiding while our legal team pursues the matter through the appropriate lawful channels. The Party will continue to monitor developments closely and will provide further information to the public as soon as the relevant facts are established.
The Abia PDP remains committed to the rule of law, constitutional democracy, the protection of fundamental rights and the peaceful resolution of all issues through lawful and institutional processes.
