CRISIS IN UKWA EAST LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL AS ABIA INFORMATION COMMISSIONER, PRINCE OKEY KANU CONDEMNS VIOLENCE, CALLS FOR CALM

The Honourable Commissioner for Information in Abia State and Leader of the Labour Party in Ukwa East LGA, Prince Okey Kanu, has expressed deep concern over the escalating crisis that broke out among councillors of the Ukwa East Legislative Council on Tuesday, 25 November 2025.

In an official statement, the Commissioner described the reports of confrontation, unrest, and acts of violence within the council as disturbing and unacceptable. He condemned every form of physical aggression, intimidation, and destruction of government property, stressing that such conduct does not reflect the values of Ukwa East or the Labour Party.

Kanu emphasised that while disagreements and divergent views are normal in any parliamentary setting, they must never be allowed to degenerate into chaos. He reminded councillors and party stakeholders that their primary obligation is to uphold peace, discipline, and respect for democratic principles.

According to him, the integrity of legislative institutions must remain sacrosanct, and differences should be resolved through dialogue, reconciliation, and mutual understanding.

The Commissioner appealed to councillors, party members, and supporters to remain calm and avoid actions or statements that could worsen the situation. He disclosed that the Labour Party leadership in the local government, working with relevant authorities, has commenced steps to engage the warring parties, investigate the incident, and restore lasting peace in the council.

Reassuring residents, Kanu affirmed that the unity and progress of Ukwa East remain his top priority. He warned that division and disorder are detrimental to collective development and urged all stakeholders to prioritise the greater good of the people.

He concluded with a message of hope, expressing confidence that through cooperation and dialogue, Ukwa East will overcome the temporary setback and continue to stand as a model of responsible leadership and democratic maturity.
