JUST IN: All cardinals around the world are now summoned to Rome.
The Dean of the College of Cardinals, His Eminence Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, has now summoned all cardinals around the world whether electors or not, to the general congregations, which are meetings to assess the situation of the Church and prepare for the conclave, the date of which is yet to be decided.
English translation of the letter:
“Your Eminence,
As has been officially announced, His Holiness Pope Francis entered into eternal life this morning at 7:45 a.m.
In accordance with no. 19 of the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, I formally convoke the Cardinal electors to the General Congregations of the College of Cardinals, scheduled during the vacancy of the Apostolic See and in preparation for the Conclave.
The first meeting will take place tomorrow morning at 9:00 in the Synod Hall.
I cordially invite the Cardinals who are over 80 years of age to also take part in the preparatory General Congregations, who, however, as provided for by n. 7 of the aforementioned Apostolic Constitution, are free to participate or not to participate.
With a heavy heart I send fraternal greetings.”
