Boy who stood before Peter Obi’s convoy regains freedom after months in Kirikiri prison
The Magistrate Court in Apapa has freed the 17-year-old minor, Alabi Quadri, who went viral ahead of the 2023 general elections for standing in front of the convoy of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Magistrate Adetola Olorunfemi freed him following the legal advise of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Prior to his release, Alabi had appeared before a Magistrate Court on at least three occasions leading to his remand on the Minimum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Apapa, Lagos.
His lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, had in a statement made available to journalists today, and titled, “Nigeria has happened to Alabi Quadri,” said that efforts to get facts of the arrest and detention from the Magistrate Court, Apapa, Lagos proved abortive leading the lawyer and some family members to pay a visit to the custodial centre to see the young man on Wednesday.
It emerged from the visit that Alabi’s journey to prison began when some self-acclaimed area boys of his locality who felt entitled to a share of the unexpected fortune that came his way as a result of that viral video started to threaten him for not sharing.
Alabi was dragged to the police and subsequently charged with armed robbery.
