The Supreme Council of Ikwerre Government-Recognized Traditional Rulers in Rivers State Disassociates from Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Asserts Ikwerre’s Independent Ethnic Identity

In a statement on Monday signed by the council’s chairman, His Majesty King Leslie Eke, Eze Oha Evo III of Evo Kingdom in Obio/Akpor local government, and the secretary, Nye-Weala Omerelu of Ikwerre local government area, His Royal Highness Ben Ugo, the council cautioned the Rivers State Government and the public to remain vigilant against what it described as “tricks and pranks of Igbo expansionists.”

The council reaffirmed the Ikwerre people’s ancestral ties to the ancient Benin Kingdom, honoring their forebears, Akalaka.

They also stated that the Iwhuruohna people share the same ancestry with the Ekpeye and Ogba ethnic groups of Rivers State, emphasizing that the Ikwerre ethnic group is rooted in Rivers State and the Niger Delta region.
